Indian Medical Association is registered under societies Act XXI/1860. The Headquarters of IMA is in New Delhi. IMA has 31 State Branches. Even though, the Delhi Medical Association was formed a few decades ago, it was only in December 1928 that an All India Medical Conference was held under the Presidentship of Dr. G.V.Desmukh and under the Reception Committee Chairmanship of Dr.Nilratan Sircar.  During this conference the following resolution was adopted.
"Resolved that an All India Medical Association be formed with the objective  of looking after the interest of Medical Education, Public Health and Medical Profession in India and this body  be duly Registered under the Act XXI/1860".
 
It was this All India Medical Association formed as early as 1928 which came to be known as "Indian Medical Association" in later years. At that time I.M.A. had 222 members and now it exceeds 1,75,000 members. It is interesting to know that I.M.A. is a founder member of World Medical Association.
 
IMA Kerala State Branch was formed in 1957. The following are the parental organisations of IMA KSB.
1.         Malabar District Medical Association formed in 1931
2.        Travancore Medical Association formed in 1932
3.        Cochin Medical Association (at Cochin)  formed in 1937
4.        Cochin Medical Association (at Trichur)  formed in 1938
5.        All Cochin Medical Association formed in  1945
6.        Travancore Cochin Medical Association formed in  1950
7.        IMA Kerala State Branch formed in  1957
 
IMA Kerala State Branch had 10 local branches with 756 members for the 1st Annual Conference held at Alappuzha on 20th October 1957. Now we have 97 local branches with a membership strength of 17,236 (as on 30.09.2007).
